One year! Above is a picture of producer-supreme, Michael Collins Ajereh aka Don Jazzy,
a rotund one year-old, happy-faced and carefree, content to run around
in diapers, learning from life, nature and the influences around him.
Nature taught him survival, life gave him ambition, and the creativity
in him that has been a defining factor in his life…who knows where that
fell from?
Heaven perhaps! At one year old he had his finger artfully pointing at the top, the sky, the moon, the intergalactic atmosphere, and all that above inspires, and today, he’s name resides at the top of Nigerian entertainment. Wonder wonder!
Yesterday, Mavin Records reached the 1-year mark, and it’s been quite a rollercoaster of achievements since the Don in a gathering of the industry’s crème-de-la-cream uttered these words; “The way forward now is to make sure I keep bringing you guys more of the beautiful music you all love to dance to” and in the process, officially launched a collective of some of Nigeria’s greatest artists and producers – Mavin Records. This happened on May 8 2012, and 365 days later, a myriad of show-stopping hit songs later, and a crop of lucrative money-spinning endorsement deals later, and we bring you a brief portfolio (an informal one, don’t forget) of their achievement in one year!
Shoot!
Don Jazzy! Never have a man for the sidelines, always a protagonist of beautiful music and a staunch believer in creativity and new definitions of originality.
In 365 days, the Mavin CEO, Don Jazzy has been quite over the plaece, creating…
- “IDJA” – ‘It’s Don Jazzy Again’ to more than just a voice tag or Twitter trend but a guaranteed stamp of quality.
- Samsung endorsement deal.
- Loya Milk endorsements
- Opening and recently shutting down the now-defunct ‘Pop’ night club. (it’s an achievement too. At least he opened it!)
Here are a few hits from their expansive smashing catalogue that have sent the industry into the land of dancing epilepsy! “Take Banana”, “Chocolate”, “Oma Ga”, “Amarachi”, “Goody Bag”, “The Kick”, “Without my heart”, “Rotate”, “Sexcellency”, “See Me Ri” and ”Afefe”.
And his ensigns, the contracted artistes on his payroll individually have been beneficiaries of his creativity. Apart from raking in the handsome cash reward directly from music, the Don Jazzy-effect have sent ripples into their lives that have made them hit personal milestones. Tiwa Savage is the proud enjoyer of a Pepsi endorsement deal, with rumours dropping from the grapevine that GLO wants her to port go. That smells of money!
Dr. Sid is one who away from the music has also personally sucked in some advancement by his unveiling of a confectionery line. He owns Indulge Cookies! Yummy!
The journey’s been tough for Don Jazzy and Mavin Records, but in one year of existence they’ve yielded tangible fruits. They have an album by D’Prince titled Frenzy. And it stands as a testimony of their brilliance. Their first ever full-length album.
So we end with a Congratulations Mavin Records! Our Stamp of Approval on them, and a glowing tribute to all they’ve achieved so far. They’ve not reached the lofty heights of Mo’Hits, but they’re well on there way, and we’ll be right with them, feeding on the beautiful melodies they’re sure to drop us.
It’s Don Jazzy again! so the little boy with the raised finger can repeat the act as a satisfied ambitious icon of creativity.
