Two neighbors thought that they hit the jackpot when one of them found $150,000 in cash in the backyard, however, none of them lived long enough to actually receive the money, according to police reports in Illinois. An Illinois lawyer, who was involved in hammering out a settlement in the case, said that the two people set to split $150,000 found in a McHenry County, Illinois, garden, have died, prompting some to wonder if the money is cursed.
Robert Burke, an attorney representing Wayne Sabaj, said his client, who found bags of money while tending his garden, was to enter into an agreement in court next week that would have split the money between himself and the neighbor, but he died this week.

Sabaj’s neighbor, Delores Johnson, whose daughter made a claim for the money in her name, also died before the cash was distributed. Johnson died late last year at the age of 87, she told her daughter that she had gotten rid of the money because it was cursed, Burke said, citing court documents.

“Apparently, she was right. The money seems to be cursed,” Burke said.
His client, 51, died of complications from diabetes Monday, the McHenry County Coroner said.

When Sabaj’s father learned that his son died, he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized, Burke said.
Burke said the deal will proceed without them.

The owner of a liquor store in Naperville also filed a lawsuit claiming the money, saying it had been stolen from him in 2010. Burke said Wednesday he has oral and written statements of the store owner that he is dropping his claim.

The source of the cash remains a mystery, the lawyer said.
Sabaj gave the money to the authorities, saying he thought that was the right thing to do. Sabaj said later that he suspects it was drug money thrown out of an airplane.
